Man-land system, which is a human-and related system based on the certain region of theEarth surface, is the core of geography research. It is the basis and foundation of the regionalsustainable development that the man-land system is developing at coupled and coordinatedstate. As a typical example for rapidly urbanized area, the man-land system of urbanagglomeration is relatively complicated. Bohai rim area rises recently and becomes the thirdlargest economic region of China. It is in the stage of rapid urbanization from the year2003to2011and the evolution characteristic of its man-land system is obvious. Based on the datacollection and complication and combination of the related theories in geography, systemscience, urbanization theory and sustainable development theory, this thesis made empiricalanalysis on the spatial and temporal evolution process and rule of man-land system in the threeagglomerations of Bohai-rim from the two dimensions of city and agglomeration by using awide variety of technical means, such as the method of correlation analysis, entry valuemethod and coupling model. In addition, the thesis explored the factors and driving forceswhich affect the coupling evolution of man-land system in rapidly urbanized regions, in orderto offer scientific decision references for the man-land’s optimizing control and the sustainabledevelopment in the rapidly urbanized areas represented by Bohai agglomeration. Main resultsof this dissertation are as follows:(1) On the studies of man-land system, there are more studies about the city system thanthe urban agglomeration system. Among the available researches of the agglomeration’sman-land system, the more are across the whole country, about the Yangtze river delta and thePearl river delta than the Bohai-rim urban agglomeration. In the researches of city’s man-landsystem, some studied the coupling of urbanization and the ecology and some studied therelation about one class of resource factors or environment elements which emphasized therestrictive factors and the studies all lacked the research about the coupling of the twosubsystems of man and land system which is multifunctional and have many factors. Inaddition, there are many studies researching the coupling of man-land system, but lessanalyzed the process and rule of the coupling evolution. Thereby the researches which peeled the driving factors to the man-land harmonious development off the indicator system areseldom. At present, it is important to reinforce the multi-disciplinary integration and payattention to the use of new technologies such as GIS and patterns.(2) It can be discovered from the synthesis scores of the two subsystems that of the29cities in Bohai-rim agglomeration the urbanization level enhances unceasingly, the populationquality and structure improved, the economic level increased and the comprehensivedevelopment level of the man subsystem improved steadily from the year2003to2011. Onthe other side, from the aspect of the comprehensive level of land subsystem, it was obviousthat Bohai-rim is restricted by the water resource and energy, and the pollution was becomingmore serious with the economic development while the environmental protection dynamicwasn’t enhanced effectively. Therefore, the environmental conditions went up and down. Theinteraction between human and land was obvious.(3)The spatial evolution characteristic of the man-land coupling degree in Bohai-rimagglomeration changed from concentration to dispersion. The coupling degree was on adeclining curve. More cities distributed in the phase of high-level at first and then theydispersed. The coordination degree was concentrated on the moderation and then thelow-grade. There were few cities in an extreme coordination state. The cities were not manywhich were in high-level coordination state and the quantity fluctuated. The changing postureof the coordination degree developed from the moderation to the low-level.(4) The conclusions from the agglomeration research are as follows: the change trends ofthe three agglomerations were almost the same. The coupling degrees of the three were alldecreasing steadily and reduced greatly in2010. The coupling degree of Liaoning was inferiorto the other two agglomerations and the disparity was widening. The change of couplingdegree in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration was assuasive and the coupling degreechanged remarkably in Liaoning and Shandong peninsula. While the change of the couplingcoordination degree was obviously different from the change of coupling degree and itdeclined in2010.(5) The overall difference of man-land coupling evolution in Bohai-rim was shown as:there was very big difference of man-land coupling state between the three urbanagglomerations. The man-land coupling state of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei agglomeration was relatively stable and changed very small and it put up the continuity and stability which astably developed agglomeration should have. The Shandong peninsula agglomeration is madeup of the new cities and developed in the point-axis model with two cores. Its man-landcoupling state whose spatial-temporal changed remarkable went up and down and the interiordifference was large. The Liaoning agglomeration is made up of new and old cities. Itsman-land coupling state showed the characteristic which integrated the features of the othertwo agglomerations. The temporal variation of coupling degree was stable in the first half andtwists and turns in the last half. The spatial difference was significant while be clusterdeveloped.(6) The factors and driving forces which influence the spatial-temporal evolution ofman-land coupling in the rapidly urbanized areas lie in the differences of natural foundation, discrepancy between or inside the zones, the difference of the economic foundation andstructure changes and the style of economic development. In addition, the differences of socialpolicies and opening degree to the outside and the urbanization result in a remarkable diverseof the spatial-temporal evolution of man-land coupling.
