In the21th century, with the increasing development of science and technology, the internetis used in every field of the world, and it could be found that human being had entered the time ofnetwork. As an important part of the network, the number of network equipment is increasingrapidly, as well with the network equipment’s power consumption. And among the networkequipments, the router is the most important one because it can receive one network’s packets andsend to another network with the protocol of routing selection and routing forward. On the otherhand, because of considering the economic and environment, making for use of energy is placedan important position in the next network’sresearch. Above on,it will be having great researchvalue for reducing the power consumption of the router.This paper firstly introduces the experiment platform for the research, and analyzes theresearch status at home and abord. Then the working theory and internal structure of the referencerouter based on NetFPGA are interpreted. On the basis of the reference router, we design a newrouter which can work on five frequency to adjust the power consumption. Moreover, we designtwo adaptive frequency modulation mechanism. One is based on external data traffic statistics,and another is based on internal cache memory in router. At last, we use the instrument to test thepower consumption of the router which can work on five frequency, so we can come to aconclusion.After researching the working principal and internal structure of the reference router on theNetFPGA platform, this paper design a adaptive frequency modulation router which based on dataflow. And putting forward two adaptive frequency modulation mechanism, which is based onexternal data traffic statistics and internal cache memory in router. Then the adaptive frequencymodulation router is designed by hardware circuit. At last, testing the router power optimizationwith two adaptive frequency modulation mechanism on the power test platform. According to theexperimental result, the power consumption of the adaptive frequency modulation router reduces15%-20%compared on the reference router when the router works with the low frequency.At preset, there are some research of the router power consumption at home and aboard, butthe adaptive frequency modulation router based on data flow has not been proposed in theliterature. So there is a certain innovation significance to research this topic.
