The Islam and Muslim news is one of the important agendas of The New York Times and TheTimes, because of the policy making demand of the USA and British. This article analyzes thereports about Islam and Muslim of New York Times and The Times from2006to2012, exploringthe frame, agenda setting, and vocabulary of these reports. The article finds the reporting aboutIslam and Muslim focuses on political news, religion news and military news and there is lessnews about economy, technology, culture and education of Islam countries. The religion news ismainly about the religion conflict, Koran, Muslim women’s veil. The fight against terrorism andextremism occupies large reporting pages. The words, such as terrorist, extremism, jihad, brutal,bias are widely used in many reports. Officials, religion people, media, common people are themain news sources. However, the western media and western people are more widely used assources than Islam media and Muslim. In conclusion, there is bias in The New York Times and TheTimes’ reporting about Islam and Muslim. As the book Oriental said, the western treat themselvesas “we” and treat the eastern as “they”, and the westerner think there is great difference between“we” and “they”, and “we” need to save this mean, brutal, ignorant “they”. This kind of thinkinginfluences the way of news reporting about Islam and Muslim. |
