With the development and popularization of smart user equipments (SUE), manymobile Internet applications which are deeply loved by the mobile users have given tobirth, such as mobile instant messaging(MIM) services, which has led to a dramatic growthof mobile data traffic volume and a severe shortage of wireless nework resources, and theoperators· networks have been overwhelmed. At the same time, the costs of the networkoperating have been rising up, and the profit growth rate has been decreasing, which hasbeen lagged far behind of the data traffic growth rate. Current network of telecomoperators does not provide any other valuable services except bandwidth and pipe, and itis often referred to a dumb pipe. The smart pipe technology brings new hope for the telecom operators who are facingthe dumb pipe dilemms to enhance the profit growth rate and reduce the burdens of thenetwork. The Policy and Charging Control (PCC) architecture, which was defined by3GPP, is the core smart pipe control architecture for mobile Internet. However, PCCarchitecture is not perfect, and it has many inherent drawbacks. For examples, it isrestricted by the deep packet inspection (DPI) technology, and does not consider thesaving of the radio resources, the optimization of the typical mobile Internet applicationprotocols, the supporting roles of SUE, and so on. In order to save wireless resources andoptimize the mobile Internet application protocols, we must allow the SUE to get involved. As the most widely used mobile Internet services, mobile IM services contribute thelargest amount of mobile data traffic compared with other mobile Internet services, andthey have great value of optimization. In this paper, Mobile IM protocol optimization andsmart pipe control will focus on the smart pipe control strategies for mobile IM protocolsand make full use of the advantages of the SUEThis paper firstly discusses the status quo of standard PCC reference architecture, andpoints out some of its drawbacks. It analyzes the typical mobile Internet applicationprotocols-MIM protocol, proposes some MIM protocol optimization strategis, anddesigns the C/S (client/server) mode-based protocol optimization control architecture. Itsets up a protocol optimization control mediation in the the SUE and in the serverrespectively. Through the two mediations, a large variety of protocol optimization control strategies can be applied, such as the message compression or decompression strategy, themessage merging or spin-off strategy, the service priority control strategy, the heartbeatmessage delay strategy, and so on. The C/S mode-based protocol optimization controlarchitecture is much simpler than the PCC architecture, but a lot of ideas, concepts andprinciples of it are learned from the PCC architecture. This paper presents the detaileddesigns and implementations of the two protocol optimization control mediations.
