As pervasive computing environments grow, more and more context-awareapplications, from path planners on vehicles to smart building systems, are used in ourdaily life, bringing us convenience and fortune. Generally, a context-aware applicatonoffers its service or information to users according to users’ environment and preference.For this feature, context-aware applications are very popular among people andcontext-aware computing becomes a hot topic in the research area of computer science.For the implementation of context-aware applicatons, modeling contexts anddesigning the architecture of context-aware system are two important steps. They alldecide the efficiency of the applications. Moreover, for different backgrounds, a commonmodel and architecture of context-aware applications may help improving the popularityof context-aware technique. Therefore, researches on context modelling and inferring andthe developing of a uniform framework of context-aware system are two very importantissues in the area of context-aware computing.To solve these problems, this paper first reviews the state-of-the-art of contextmodelling, context inferring and the architecture of context-aware system. Then based onthese works, an abstract of the way context-aware application works is proposed, whichis the theory of space transforming in this paper. Based on this theory, a context modeland related inferring algorithm are proposed. This model,which clearifies the goal ofdesigning contexts, classified contexts into two classes, which is service-oriented anddata-oriented, according to the features of context-aware applications. Besides, thismodel uses both fuzzy theory and probobilitic theory to handle uncertainty in contexts,which offers more flexibilities. After the modelling contexts, a framework ofcontext-aware system based on space transforming is desinged. This framework works ina way of distributed manner and it infers contexts faster. At last, in order to examine thismodel and the framework, a prototype is built. This prototype is one part of Smart Home.The result shows that the context model based on space transforming has low complexityand high flexibility, and the framework of context-aware system based on spacetransforming is efficient with high scability.
