In recent years, with fast economic development and increasingly high degree of industrialization, the demand for electricity has multiplied. At the same time, however, the maintainance and upgrade of the electrical equipment are still lagging, the monitoring level of monitoring equipment also needs to be improved. So the State Grid Corporation of China is faced with increasingly severe test at the transmission capacity, stability of the power supply, fatigue resistance of the transmission line and the ability to withstand natural disasters and so on.Overhead transmission line under the condition of the low temperature is very easy to glaciate and cause such disasters as the broken line and the collapsed tower on the environment of the snowy and windy. This phenomenon brings a serious threat to the normal and stable operation of the transmission line. Especially in recent years our country has encountered rare disasters of freezing rain and snow in history, which causes great losses to the state and society. While the existing ice monitoring system has many problems, such as big power consumption, easy damage, unstable data information transmission, weak transmission signal and difficult power supply. Therefore, developing a on-line monitoring system for transmission lines ice cover which is stable to operate and can collect data accurately is the most important task for the research and design personnel of electric power industry.This topic comes from the scientific research project on the transmission line safe operation of the online monitoring and on-site control system of power Supply Company of Datong in Shanxi province. On the basis of the research of wireless communication technology, data acquisition system and the optical fiber sensing technology, this paper develops a set of on-line monitoring system of ice cover about transmission line, which puts ARM technology and sensor technology as the core and ZigBee and GPRS technology as the medium.The detailed work of this topic is described in following section(1)Analysis and discussion of the development status of transmission lines ice monitoring system both in China and abroad. Comparison and analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of various monitoring ice methods.(2)Introduction and organic combination of the characteristics and advantages of optical fiber sensing and wireless communication technology. Besides the practicality and feasibility of the system, proposition of a project of sensing monitoring of ice thickness based on the principle of optical fiber and ZigBee which will be a solution to such difficulties as regionally non-signaled and ill accuracy of thickness monitoring.(3)Design of hardware circuits of the monitoring system including choice of part of components, acquisition of microprocessor,wireless communications and sensor data, acquisition and storage of image, JTAG interface and design of power management circuit. All of these provide a reliable hardware platform for the operation of control software.(4) Completion of the design of the monitoring system software and detailed elaboration of respective design process of key modules subroutine.(5) A brief introduction of the Control Center software.
