The PCI bus is one of the most widely used high-performance local bus. So far, thebus has reached a mature standard. While with its efficiency data transmissioncharacteristics, the PCI bus has been choosing by many instrument manufacturers in thefield of modular instrument product development. In addition, with the rapiddevelopment of instrument bus technology, the machine-type universal counter to thedevelopment of modular-type instrument has become a trend. The design module basedon the PCI bus is a dual-channel universal counter module with high-speedmeasurement and processing function for the input signal.After a detailed functional requirements analysis and design index analysis, wetake a comparison and verification for various functional modules of the universalcounter circuit. Then, we finally give the module design principles and whole designprogram. The system designed module are composed of the analog signal input circuit,the measurement logic circuit, PCI interface circuit respectively. This article elaboratedon the each part of the circuit, and gave specific circuit design and key componentsselecting description. In addition, the PCI bus communication principles as well asspecific FPGA logic implementation of the system measurement module are alsodiscussed in detail. Finally, we take a simple narrative and analysis for the universalcounter module debugging, and summarizes the problems encountered in the process ofdebugging and solutions.The dual-channel universal counter module based on the PCI bus has five majormeasurement functions, such as frequency measurement, period measurement, timeinterval measurement, counting measurement and frequency ratio measurement. Besides,it has other functions of adjusting trigger level and hysteresis window, chooseing thegate time, switching the measurement channel and setting the input channel conditions.The module measures the time interval resolution5ns and225MHz analog input signalbandwidth and50Vpp input signal amplitude.
