Study Of Chinese Nationalism’s Effect On Sports Of Contemporary China

The foundation of the People’s Republic of China has opened a new chapter ofChina’s sports development. Chinese nationalism， with the essential of pursuingnational independence，autonomy and prosperity，and realizing the great rejuvenationof Chinese nation， has gong though the journey of over60years along with Chinesesports. Liu Peng wrote in the beginning of his The60Years of New China’s Sports， AJourney from Sick Men of East Asia to Sports Power that： sports undertaking is suchan epitome of the splendor course and great achievement of China’ s socialistmodernization program，and also the embodiment of Chinese nation’s efforts to realizethe great rejuvenation.” The profound influences of China’ s nationalism tocontemporary China’ s sports are worth of systematic conclusion and summary.Targeting the influences of China’s nationalism to contemporary China’s sports， thepaper adopts document literature method， system analysis method， and logicalanalysis method to analyze and conclude the influences of China’s nationalism tocontemporary China’ s sports during the formation process of the ideology anddevelopment strategy of contemporary China’ s sports through the analysis andconclusion of the characteristics of China’s nationalism and combining the historicalpractices of contemporary China’s sports. The study believes that：due to the historicalhumiliation feeling deep inside， close connection with state politics， and the powerconsciousness of pursuing national rejuvenation， etc.， and， on account of thedemands such as defending the dignity and building the great image of the nation withsports， China’ s nationalism has become the maximum driving force for thedevelopment of contemporary China’s sports development; Under the influence ofChina’s nationalism，the sports ideology of contemporary China has gone through fourstages in different historical periods，i.e.，national salvation-oriented sports ideology，diplomacy-oriented sports ideology， patriotism-oriented sports， and sportspower-oriented sports; under the influence of different kinds of domestic andinternational situation， China’s sports development strategy has gradually transited from the “combination of popularization with the raising of standards” to “givingpriority to the development of competitive sports” along the principle line of the sportsideology of “winning honor for the country”; along with the great achievementsobtained under the influences of China’s nationalism， contemporary China’s sportsis also faced with varieties of shortcomings.
