Object ive:Insomnia, a type of sleep disorder due to the inability to fall asleep, is a common sight in clinical practice nowadays. It has become a concerning issue in today’s world due to the fast-paced society that we are residing in where we are continuously exposed to different situation and environment. A mild sleeping disorder can be regulated by our human body whereas a major disorder will disrupt our daily lives and will require medical intervention. In the medical world today, the main treatment for insomnia involves the prescription of sedative and hypnotic drugs that is short-lived and rapid onset, thus effective. However, the undesirable side effects include recurring condition after stopping medication, leading to drug dependency. Therefore there is a need to search for alternative approach to treat insomnia. With a vast knowledge and experience in treatment methods in clinical studies, minimal side effects and satisfactory short and long-term results, Chinese medicine has an advantage by utilizing a more systematic approach in the treatment of insomnia. My mentor, Professor Fu Guo Bin, whose teacher is Mr. Zang Fu Ke, uses a unique method of abdomen vibration therapy in the treatment of various medical illnesses with significant results. The main objective of my study is to study the effect of abdomen vibration therapy in the treatment of insomnia, using a random experiment group and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scale for assessment, with the standard insomnia massage treatment as the control group and using the results comparison method to access the effectiveness of abdomen vibration therapy primarily.Methodology:This research is done using clinical observation.60patients, who fulfilled the requirement were chosen from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine Dongfang Hospital Tuina department, were divided into2groups for treatment. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scale (PSQI) is used for treatment assessment. The experiment group is subjected to both standard insomnia massage treatment and abdomen vibration therapy, whereas the control group is only subjected to the standard insomnia massage treatment. Patients undergo a total of four treatments in a span of a month and are assessed using the PSQI before, during and after the four treatments. PSQI scores are recorded and evaluated using SPSS19.0for analysis and evaluation. Test level a=0.05, measurement data using t test, chi-square test count data, class data using ridit test. There is no significant difference between the experiment and control group before treatment. Sleep quality, sleeping time, daytime activity and PSQI scores improves significantly after treatment. There is significant difference between the experiment and control group, with the experiment group having a PSQI score higher than the control group.ConclusionThis experiment shows that standard insomnia massage treatment is effective in improving the sleeping time, sleeping quality and duration. In addition, there is more significant effect with the incorporation of the abdomen vibration therapy. This experiment aims to analyze the treatment of insomnia using the Chinese medicine theory and the effect of abdomen vibration therapy in insomnia treatment, thus introducing new alternatives in the clinical treatment of insomnia.
