In the British Modernism Art movement advocated by Roge Fry and Clive Bell,Stanley Spencer(l891—1959)acted allalong as a outstand ing outlier. In the prevailing current of pursuing "significant form", Spencer had been held all the while his interesting of "significant things",or more exactly,Spencer did not abandon his belief and aspiration for narrative, objective things and it’s integrality and meaning in the current of formalism and abstractionism.This paper, in the context of Britishi Modernism Art mainstream, by analyzing penetratingly and in details spencer’s works (thematic works represented by such ones like Sandam Memorial Chaple Mural in Burghclere, Shiping Buliding on the Clyde and the Church of Me Series and nude portrait works represented by such ones like the Leg of Mutton Xude and Self-Portrait with Patrica Prcece), interprets his painting art,by accepting formalism movement fruit and construction of the Early Renaissance and Post-Impressionist art’ formal feeling, it consistently acclaim of objective things and they meanings."significant things" stands for Spencer’s special position in Modernism Art movement.
