Steroidal saponins are an important class of chemical constituents from traditional Chinese medicine. They show various pharmacological activites, such as antithrombus, antifungal, antitumor and antifertility, and attract much attention for their medicinal potentiality."Luanyezhizhubaodan" is the rhizomes of Aspidistra typica Baill., which is a perennial medicinal plants from Convallariaceae. It is usually used to treat fractures, congestion and snake-bite as a folk herbal medicine. It is reported that Convallariaceae is an abundant source of medicinal plants and rich in steroidal saponins. However, a few studies on the chemical constituents from Convallariaceae are reported. On a purpose of acquiring more information from the steroidal saponin of Convallariaceae, a systematic phytochemical investigation was carried out on the rhizomes of Aspidistra typica. Totally36compounds were separated chromatographically using a series of silica gel columns, MCI CHP20/P50columns, RP-C18silica gel columns and PHPLC. The structures of33compounds were elucidated by MS,1D-and2D-NMR (’H-’H COSY、HSQC、HMBC、NOESY、ROESY) experiments and chemical methods. There were29new compounds including16furostanol saponins and13spirostanol saponins. The aglycones of compounds6,7,10,11,12,13,14,15,18,21,22and25were found and identified for the first time. These steroidal saponins which contained a series of polyhydroxyl, E-ring opened and C-5, C-6-epoxyl sapogenins and one pair of C-23R/S isomers (a methoxy group was linked at C-23in α/β orientations) were rarely reported.
