Transforming growth factor-beta1(TGF-β1) is a multifunctionalcytokine, with significant immunomodulatory and fibrogenic characteristics, and plays a pivotal role both in inflammation and extracellular matrixdeposition. Understanding the regulation of TGF-β1in chronicinflammatory airway diseases, such as CRS, asthma and COPD,characterized by airway inflammation and remodeling, may be the key touncover the pathomechanisms of these diseases. Many factors, such ascigarette smoking, oxidative stress, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, bradykininand miRNAs, have been demonstrated influencing the activity of TGF-β1through regulating it’s expression or signal transduction. This review willsummarize the current knowledge on the roles of TGF-β1and it’sinfluencing factors in chronic inflammatory airway diseases, therefore toreveal the pathomechanisms and bring innovative treatment strategies forthese diseases.
