The mortality rate of acute respiratory distress syndrome/respiratory failure iscurrently very high in the world, and it is not effective to change it by traditionaltreatment. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as a new advancedtechnology drives the blood into the ECMO loop through the veno-venous (V-V)catheter, completing the oxygenation of blood and discharging carbon dioxide. At thesame time the lungs have enough rest, which uses the "lung rest" strategies to make the"disease" recover, or provides a time window of lung transplantation, artificial lungapplication. So it can greatly improve the totally survival rate of acute respiratorydistress syndrome/respiratory failure. Because of the severity of complications, theprofessional requirement of medical staff and the relative lack of experience oftreatment, there are some difficulties in practice. This review tries to evaluateobjectively the ECMO-VV mode and get specific indications in the treatment of acuterespiratory distress syndrome/respiratory failure by introducing its history, components, catheter, indications and contraindications, clinical effect.
