The Effect Of Risperidone On Bone Mineral Density In Males With Schizophrenia

Objective:To investigate the effect of risperidone on bone mineral density(BMD)in males with schizophrenic and the action mechanism.Methods: A tatal of60male patients with schizophrenia(case group) and60healthy subjects(control group) participated in the study. By using 《Bone mineraldensity influence factor questionnaire》, we could know the healthy state and the factorsaffected the bone mineral density(BMD) of the two populations. Bone status wasmeasured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA). By using bivariate correlationmethod, we analyze the dependablity between the BMD values and each factors. Multiplestepwise regression method was employed to analyze the main factors affected the BMD.Results: There were14patients (45cases in control group) whose BMD valueswere normal and27patients (2cases in control group) with osteoporosis. Age (P>0.05)had no differences between two groups, but there were significant differences (P<0.05)in the BMD values, body mass index, smoke, milk and exercise, and the BMD values ofpatients were lower than the control group. The BMD values of patients were negetivelyrelated with the risperidone (r=-0.811, p=0.000), smoke (r=-0.275, p=0.035) and age(r=-0.289, p=0.027), while positively with exeicise (r=0.261, p=0.045). The main factoraffected the BMD of patients was risperidone (β=-0.712,p=0.000).Conclusion: The BMD values of patients were significantly lower than healthypopulations, risperidone was the main factor. Risperidone could lead to a loss of bonemass and increase the risk of bone fracture, and therefore appropriate choice ofantipsychotic is crucial, especially for gerontal patients.
