Objective: To comparatively evaluate clinical and radiographical effectiveness ofsingle visit and multiple visit endodontic therapy over one year.Method: Subjects having teeth with chronic pulpitis and apical periodontitis(N=256) were recruited to a randomized clinical trial.256patients met the inclusioncriteria and consented to participate in this study. Patients were randomly assigned toeither the one-visit (130) or multiple visit group (126), and root canal therapy wasperformed with a standardized protocol. Patients in the multiple-visit group received anintracanal dressing of calcium hydroxide paste. Follow ups of3days,1week,1month,3months,6months and1year after treatment were done.235patients;115in theone-visit group and120in the multiple-visit group, were evaluated at the end of12months. Outcome measures for effectiveness between single-visit and multiple-visit wasdenoted as Success or Questionable or Failure according to criteria laid down byGutmann(1992).Results: Of235subjects available for final recall,5presented as failure in onevisit group and3in the multiple visit group. Fifteen patients from the single visit groupand six patients from multiple-visit group were excluded from the study as they failed tofollow the scheduled revisit. One hundred and fifteen patients were undergoingone-visit treatment (group1) and one hundred and twenty undergoing multiple-visittreatment (group2). The success rate of single visit group is95.7%and that ofmultiple-visit group is97.5%. There was no statistically significant difference insuccess rate experienced by two groups.(P>0.05).Conclusion: Study confirms that single visit endodontics may be carried out at ahigh rate of success if due attention is given to aseptic operating procedures, properinstrumentation and filling. Under these conditions an interappointment dressing withcalcium hydroxide does not seem to influence outcome.
