Mirena In The Treatment Of Adenomyosis Clinical Observation

Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy and side effects ofLevonorgestrel-releasing Intrauterine System (LNG-IUS; brand name: Mirena) in thetreatment of adenomyosis, and provide new ideas in clinical treatment of adenomyosis.Methods We selected63patients of adenomyosis treated with Mirena. The change ofdysmenorrheal, menstrual blood volume, volume of uterus, thickness of uterus innermembrane and side effects were observed and evaluated before and after1,3,6,9,12monthsinsertion respectively. Results After insertion of Mirena, the dysmenorrheal VAS scores,VRS scores and menstrual blood volume decreased markedly. Comparing with beforetreatment, the difference was statistically significant(P＜0.01). The volume of uterus reduceda little after insertion, while there were no statistical difference(P＞0.05). After insertion ofMirena，the thickness of uterus inner membrane obviously reduced. The difference wasstatistically significant(P＜0.05) in3,6,9,12months after the insertion, but without significantchange(P＞0.05) in1month after the insertion. Comparing with every period of time afterinsertion of Mirena, the mean value of dysmenorrheal VAS scores,VRS scores, menstrualblood volume and volume of uterus reduced a little, while there were no statisticaldifference(P＞0.05), however the mean value of the thickness of uterus inner membranesignificantly reduced (P＜0.05). The main side effects are little vaginal bleeding (23.8%),amenorrhea (11.1%), Mirena-dropping-out(4.8%), occurring functional ovarian cysts(3.2%)and so on. Conclusion Levonorgestrel-releasing Intrauterine System (LNG-IUS; brand name:Mirena) is an effective and safe therapy for adenomyosis. Mirena inserting inside uterine cavity can significantly alleviate dysmenorrheal and reduce menstrual blood volume.Moreover, the advantages of Mirena are inexpensive, handy and faint side effects, and it’squite promising in the clinical application.
