Objects To investigate the application of breast reconstruction that permits thesurgeon to expand and recruit sufficient tissue for modified radical mastectomy andasymmetry deformity. Methods A round tissue expander with the capacity of250-300ml filled with150-200ml water according to the capacity was placed insubpectoral position during the primary operation. Overexpansion of tissueexpander by water injection to match over25%-74%of the opposite breast was donein the next3months. The tissue expander was replaced with permanent implant inthe secondary operation. Results A group of13cases had been tested and12surgeryamong which have been completed. In addition to1cases of the expander wasremoved of infection after the primary operation to no further treatment, all caseswere ended up with satisfaction of1month to2years follow-up since2010.Conclusions The breast reconstruction with a subpectoral silicone tissue expander isan ideal treatment for modified radical mastectomy and asymmetry deformity. Womencan obtain a restored breast approximate to a full opposite breast and avoid majordistant surgical intervention and additional scars. The method through more long-termclinical application and follow-up observations in the future, is expected to furtheraffirmation and popularization and application.
