Objective To measure thalamic volume of1000healthy Chinese Han nationalityadults, and to analyse the relationship between thalamic volume and age, sex and weightcerebral volume, in order to provide reliable data for the construction of database of Chineseadults’ digital standard brain. To study the anatomy characteristics of the thalamus, in order toprovide precise data for the operations of thalamus.Methods Totally1000healthy Chinese adults of Han nationality, selected fromdifferent area in China, aged ranging from18to80were divided into5groups by age:18-30,31-40,41-50,51-60, and61-80years. Each group included200subjects composing of halfmale and half female. Brain images were obtained with1.5Tesla MR, and performed withT1WI3D MPRAGE sequences, FOV:256256mm2, slices:192, image thickness:1mm,matrix size:256256192. The outline of thalamus were drawn with Aquariusws software,then the thalamic volume was calculated automatically. Select200healthy Chinese Hanadults at random and divide them into five groups by age, each guoup with40person., harfmale and female.The anatomy value of thalamus were outlined manually in Aquariuswssoftware. The two sides of thalamic volume were compared by paired sample t-test. Differentsexes of thalamic volume in one side were compared by independent sample t-test. Anddifferent age groups of thalamic volume were compared by one-way ANOVA. Therelationship between thalamic volume and age, sex, weight and cerebral volume wereanalyzed respectively.Results1. Before standardizing, the right thalamic volume of healthy Chinese Hannationality adults’ normal range is male:(5560.876±746.529)mm3, female:(5397.983±619.188)mm3. The left side’s normal range is male:(5665.949±746.742)mm3, female:(5490.757±621.027)mm3. The standardized right thalamic volume of healthyChinese Han nationality adults’ normal range is male:(5654.623±758.719) mm3, female:(5360.410±542.319)mm3. The left side’s normal range is male:(5776.212±780.539)mm3,female:(5464.579±573.393) mm3. The left thalamic volume is bigger than the right one(P<0.05). The males’ thalamic volume is bigger than the females’ in the same side (P<0.05).Before standardizing, the right thalamic volume of18-30,31-40,41-50,51-60and61-80years old groups were (6080.359±481.353)mm3,(5778.549±562.280)mm3,(5428.034±559.840)mm3,(5308.279±500.981)mm3and (4801.928±577.623)mm3respectively, whilethe left ones were (6168.476±490.172)mm3,(5883.144±557.204)mm3,(5539.445±556.659)mm3,(5414.871±520.210)mm3and (4885.829±564.749)mm3respectively. Thestandardized right thalamic volume of18-30,31-40,41-50,51-60and61-80years old groupswere (6069.377±531.902)mm3,(5894.669±538.931)mm3,(5357.427±479.968)mm3,(5396.075±445.584)mm3and (4791.436±558.149)mm3respectively, while the left ones were(6179.821±534.289)mm3,(6046.965±561.827)mm3,(5425.667±470.902)mm3,(5551.652±526.474)mm3and (4865.999±551.728)mm3respectively. Compared withdifferent sides of thalamic volume in the5groups, except18-30and31-40years old groups,41-50and51-60years old groups, there were statistically significants between each other twogroups in both sides (P<0.05).2. Before or after standardizing, the correlation analysisbetween thalamic volume and age showed that the right and left thalamic volume were allnegatively correlated with age (r=-0.63,-0.65, P<0.05). And there were linear relationshipsbetween standardized or unstandardized thalamic volume and cerebral volume (P<0.05), butnot between thalamic volume and weight (P>0.05).Conclusions1. With high resolution,1.5T MR scanner can show grey matter andwhite matter clearly and discriminate the outline of thalamus specifically, for providingfoundations for the measurement of thalamic volume and scientific data to build Chineseadults’ digital standard brain.2.
