This paper takes Xiamen Island in Fujian Province as the research object, and explains itsstudy history and the present situation of ecosystem function and ecosystem service value.Taking the research findings obtained by Constanza and Xie Gaodi as reference as well asthe status of the study area, land ecosystem service unit value in Xiamen island is6549.94RMB based on the equivalent correction by forest stock volume per unit area to forestecosystem services value and the per unit area economic values of some main crops such ascereals, fruits and vegetables. The major natural ecosystem service values of XiamenIsland’s forests, wetlands, green spaces are evaluated. The results show that:The yearly natural ecosystem service value of Xiamen Island is3.529billion RMB, andthe average of ecosystem services is3991.63RMB per person in2012. Among all types ofthe nature ecosystem, the maximum ecosystem service value is2.793billion RMB providedby the wetland ecosystem, which accounts for79.16%. The ecosystem service values of theforest and the green spaces are0.447billion RMB and0.288billion RMB respectively.Among all types of the ecosystem service functions, the maximum ecosystem service valueis2.376billion RMB provided by climate regulation, water regulation, waste treatment inXiamen Island nature ecosystem, which accounts for67.33%. The ecosystem service valueprovided by the food production and raw materials is0.102billion RMB, which accountsfor2.91%. It shows that the economic benefits provided by forest, wetland and green spaceas raw material production and food production base are far below the values of eco serviceprovided by their ecosystems.By comparing to the ecosystem service values of Langqi Island in Fuzhou, Nan’aoCounty in Guangdong Province and Tongan in Xiamen, the results indicate that theecosystem service value keeps a certain relationship with the urban economic developmentlevel. The higher the urban economic development level, the higher the ecosystem servicevalues are, but they’re not proportional to each other. The reason why the urban economicdevelopment level affects the ecosystem service value may be that the higher the urbaneconomic development level, the more scarce the natural ecosystems and the higher degreeof attention attached. It reflects the natural ecological service value’s spatial heterogeneity. This shows that to the more developed cities, protection and development of naturalecosystems is more urgent and more important. The SWOT analysis of the development of eco-Xiamen shows that Xiamen Island hasgood geographical advantages and the potential and opportunities for development ofeco-city, and the ecosystem service values provided by the nature ecosystem in Xiamen arehuge. But it also has the problems such as a small amount of ecology, contradictionsbetween protection and development, lack of professional personnel and scientificmanagement and protection, pollution and rising problem of biological invasions. Based onthis, the paper emphasized the importance and necessity of protecting the ecosystems ofwetlands, forests, green spaces etc, and made recommendations to development andprotection of the wetlands, forests, green spaces etc. according to the actual situation ofXiamen Island.
