With the rapid development of power industry and the growth of modern power supply and the increasing complexity of power network structure, various operating parameters of power system is constantly changing and influence each other. In order to adapt to current society demands for electric power industry, substation computer monitoring system emerged. Substation monitoring system integrates a variety of intelligent electronic device (IED) and interconnects them through the appropriate communication protocol to achieve the goal of monitoring and controlling grid operation and protecting the security and stability of power operation.The technology of substation computer monitoring system is very complicated, involving many professions, such as automation, relay protection, measurement and control and communication engineering, etc. In order to monitor the operation of power grid and troubleshoot timely, protection device is essential in substation automation. This paper discusses a method of interconnecting protection devices into control system and achieves the communication between substation control layer and spacer layer in details to provide important guarantee for the safe operation of grid.Firstly this paper introduces the background and significance of the subject and comprehensively analyzes the importance of substation computer monitoring system in substation automation process and the importance of protection devices for safe operation of power grid. IEC60870-5-103protocol is formulated on the basis of IEC60870-5series standards to realize the interchange of different protection equipments (or space unit) in control system of substation. IEC60870-5-103protocol is the companion standard for the information interface of protection equipment and adopted as the national equivalent of China’s power industry standard DL/T667-1999. It is the first protection communication protocol in our country. Compared to other communication protocols, IEC60870-5-103is more complex relatively. This paper meticulously discusses IEC60870-5-103and comprehensively analyzes the application of this protocol in major protection equipment suppliers. From the perspective of control system, this paper proposes an implementation method of IEC60870-5-103protocol in substation background monitoring and control system.The research platform of this subject is based on digital substation computer monitoring system software developed by FB laboratory independently. This software communicates with slave station by drives. In order to interconnect protection equipments into monitoring system successfully, this paper develops drive by object-oriented programming ideas based on IEC60870-5-103protocol with Windows multi-threading technology, dynamic link library technology, etc.Standard IEC60870-5-103provides communication interface with serial interface. This paper designs and develops serial communication interface class. But with the rapid development of substation automation and the increasing requirements of communication technology, the major protection equipment suppliers introduce protection equipments based on Ethernet communication interface. So this paper follows the requirements and implements Ethernet-based communication drive to meet today’s substation protection equipment monitoring requirements.Finally, this subject has developed virtual device software based on serial communication style and Ethernet communication style to test the drive. Test result shows that the communication drive designed and implemented by this paper runs stably and reliably.In this context of monitoring software platform, this subject completes the research and implementation of IEC60870-5-103protocol. This paper achieves the goal of communication between digital substation computer monitoring system developed by FB laboratory independently and virtual equipments based on IEC60870-5-103through the discussion. Meanwhile this paper can provide reference for other monitoring software to develop communication system between monitoring system and protection equipment.
