With the rapid development of railway and automotive technology, the vehiclebraking performance requirements are increasing. Eddy current retarder,which has manyadvantages such as braking powerfully, stable, environmentally friendly and easy to install,has become the inevitable trend of vehicle braking system, and its application in domestichas received a lot of attention. In this paper, an accurate3-D nonlinear transientfinite-element model of eddy current retarder has been build by finite element softwareFLUX, considering the complex factors like nonlinearity of the permeability, penetrationdepth, eddy current path and so on, and more accurate analysis of the workingcharacteristic of eddy current retarder is given.The paper first introduces the structure and basic principle of eddy current retarder,and establishment a finite element model of eddy current retarder. Then Analysis theinfluence of rotor permeability, temperature, air gap, eddy current path and other factorson the braking torque, and optimize the size of the respective structural parameters. AnFan-shaped poles is proposed, which enhances radial vortex, and greatly improves thebraking torque. Eddy current retarder, which has high braking torque and is easy to adjust,is very suitable for high-speed train’s braking system.Permanent magnet eddy current retarder with the advantages of compact structure,small size, none energy consuming, is more suitable for small vehicles. The paper has alsoestablished a finite element model of the permanent magnet eddy current retarder.Through a combination of the double layer permanent magnet leak-proof magneticstructure and Halbach permanent magnet array, I propose a new structure of betterperformance, which is a good solution to the problems of low braking torque andnon-braking magnetic flux leakage.Finally, we have made a large torque eddy current retarder device and set up acorresponding experimental measurement platform. The braking torque is measuredindirectly by measuring the rotor angular acceleration, which is an ideal experimentalresults.
