Reconnecting Society: The Design Strategy Of Rural Public Serving Center Under Transformation And Reconstruction

Rural China is in the period of great social transformation nowadays. On onehand，carrying out the policy of land contract responsibility system brings the returningof small-scale peasant mode of production, which leads to the revival of the traditionalconcept and public life. On the other hand, more and more farmers have left theirvillages to become migrant workers when free markets of labor was opened under themarket economic system. The migrant workers gradually formed the modern conceptunder the modern mode of production and life. social class that have been eliminated inthe planned economy period became more weak. Conflicts and contradictions betweenconcepts of old and new, urban and rural cause the lack of authority and publicawareness, fracture of public concept of farmers. Meanwhile, the long-time guidance ofpolicy of government causes the lack of grass-roots government management, heavyfarmers’ burden, and the phenomenon of evil gentry governance villages, which makesfarmers gradually lost the social identity of environment where they are living, fracturesocial connection. A series of rural social problems gradually broke out.Draw lessons from the development experience in Japan, South Korea and Taiwanregion, rural public serving center will become the core of rural public life in the futurefor its collection of function of administrative, judicial, gathering, entertainment, avariety of technical training and information management in rural communities.Through the government guidance, they will form the reconnection ties of socialassociations which realize rural cooperative production, independent, democraticmanagement and ecological development. The authorities launched the new ruralconstruction in2005to improve infrastructure and public facilities. How architect toexplore a way to solve these problem through this opportunities is the target to thisdissertation.Firstly based on the literature reading on the theory of sociology, anthropology andpolitical economy to understand the process of development of rural society fromtraditional feudal society to the planned economy period and to the present and toexplore the essence of the present rural social problems. Conclusion is the rural societyin this transition period nowadays is lack of social cohesion because the fracture oftraditional culture and modern concept also failed to establish, which resulted thesituation of diversity and complex of social concepts and lifestyles. The corresponding relationship between space and society can be found byanalyzing and researching on types and characteristics of public space in differentperiods. This is the breakthrough point of the problem which is able to put forward withthe basic view: the top issue facing the current rural public space is how to deal with thecomplicated and diversified use of space in this diversified structure. This include3questions: how to find the identify among the old and new generations andcontemporaries. how to cope with the diversified demand use of space. how to deal withspace construction and management maintenance under the situation of insufficientfunds in rural areas.based on those questions, combined with detailed social research and the design ofPublic Serving Center in Rural Area of new residential areas in3villages of Daxian,Sichuan,3design strategy can be put forward: The identity of culture and concepts willbe rebuild through the strategies of Planning, Architectural form and publicparticipation in the design process. The function of the open layout, multiple use ofspace and as much open space as possible, which can fulfill the diversified demand useof space. In order to save cost doesn’t affect the quality, construction process and nodeare simplified and materials are purchase from local factories.At last, the group take the feedback of problems during the construction and use tomodify the design strategy. Summarize the problem before that it should be comply withthe following during the construction of rural public serving center: First of all, at theearly stages of construction, government should provide the necessary support.Secondly, democratic participation should be adopted in the process of construction.Third, traditional culture and local characteristics should be respected and protected.Finally, considering the complex and diversity of space requirements.
