Intermediate materials of copper smelting are the important raw materials thatrecover precious metals. In the process of smelting, the equilibrium of precious metalsis always a problem that plagues the industry of copper metallurgy since theequilibrium of platinum and palladium reveals the refining level of platinum andpalladium. As far as we know, there are few methods for determination of preciousmetals in the intermediate materials of copper smelting. The purpose of this article is to employ the technology of fire assay coupled withICP-OES in determining accurately platinum and palladium in the intermediatematerials of copper smelting, such as copper anode slime, platinum and palladiumconcentrate, the slag of tellurium, the slag of chloride, the residue of hydrolysis, andacid leaching residue. The major research contents as follows:1. Optimizing the ingredients schemes of lead fire assay. The samples wereenriched and separated by lead fire assay. The results of experiments of interferingshowed that the interference elements in the material had no effect for determinationof platinum and palladium. The experiment optimized the ingredients schemes ofmaterials by varying the amount of flux. The ingredients schemes of samples wereultimately determined.2. Optimizing of the parameter of ICP-OES. The effects of RF power, carrierargon flow rate and observation height on the spectralline intensity and backgroundwere studied, and the optimum instrumental conditions were selected.3. Optimizing of reducing the adsorption of platinum and palladium by AgClprecipitate. Parameter of effects of acid medium, acidity, types and concentration ofcomplexing agents, and types and concentration of elution on recoveries of platinumand palladium have been optimized in detail. The experimental results showed thatEDTA can reduce the adsorption of platinum and palladium by AgCl precipitate whensilver was precipitated in hydrochloric acid media, and the recoveries of platinum andpalladium were over98%. The method has been established on the base of abovework. 4. Evaluation of analytical performance of the method. The experimental resultsshowed that the relative standard deviation (RSD) were within0.47%~8.86%andrecoveries were within95.90%~101.2%(n=9). This method possesses advantages ofsimple, fast, accurate with satisfactory precision, and there are no such reports inliteratures.
