Based on1961-2005monthly reanalysis data of atmospheric general circulation from the U.S. national center for environmental prediction (NCEP), this paper evaluates the atmospheric general circulations in East Asia (EA) simulated by30climate models in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase five (CMIP5) historical simulation experiment. In both the aspects of the climatology and interannual variability,Taylor figures and various assessment indicators have been used to find the models which are better in simulating the atmospheric general circulation in EA. Results show that:(1) Despite the slight bias still existing in the model results, the basic spatial patterns of the climatology of sea level pressure (SLP)、850hPa wind%500hPa and100hPa geopotential height are well captured by all the models. Compared with CMIP3models, the simulation ability of CMIP5models have made a great improvement. Take sea level pressure (SLP) for example, the simulated deviations are less than6hPa over most areas of EA.(2)In terms of the climatology, the simulation ability of models to the climatology of atmospheric general circulations is better in winter than in summer in addition to850hPa meridional wind. Based on the simulation ability of models to the atmospheric general circulations, the simulation skill from high to low in the order is500hPa geopotential height100hPa geopotential height、850hPa wind and SLP in summer, but in winter, the simulation of500hPa geopotential height is best, followed by100hPa geopotential height and850hPa wind, however, SLP is relatively poor.we find5models which simulate the climatology of atmospheric general circulations in EA best. They are CESM1-CAM5、MPI-ESM-P、 EC-EARTH、ACCESS1-0and MPI-ESM-MR.(3) The abilities of the models to simulate the interannual variabilities of atmospheric general circulations in summer and winter are poor in EA,that is better in winter than summer. and Most of the models cann’t better reflect variation characteristics of the interannual variabilities of atmospheric general circulations, comparatively speaking, The abilities of the models to simulate the interannual variabilities of500hPa geopotential height is best, followed by100hPa geopotential height and850hPa wind, however, SLP is relatively poor. we find5models which simulate the interannual variabilities of atmospheric general circulations in EA best. They are MPI-ESM-MR、FGOALS-S2、MPI-ESM-P、GFDLESM-2G and CanESM2. Furthermore, the capabilities of the models in simulating the variations of the intensities of monsoon is indeed poor, especially in winter.(4) The performance of Multi-model ensemble (MME) is better than a single one, however, it is weaker than the best5models ensemble mean.
