With the rising of the SDN(Software Defined Network) which is represented by OpenFlow, the OpenFlow has been more and more widely used and deployed. Therefore the research of efficient measurement techniques on OpenFlow network becomes increasingly significant. The unique features of OpenFlow network make the measurement and monitoring techniques on OpenFlow network quite different from these on IP network. On one hand, because the controller knows the exact transmition path of every data flow, it is meaningful that we can conduct path based measurement on OpenFlow network. On the other hand, the feature of separation of control and forwarding makes the participation of the controller necessary when measuring paths on OpenFlow network and the feature of centralized control makes researchers do their best to reduce the controller’s additional measurement related burden when designing the measurement techniques because the controller is responsible for all control tasks. In order to measure round-trip delay, round-trip jitter and packet loss rate, we extend the OpenFlow protocol and the OpenFlow switch and design and implement the Monitoring Subsystem of OpenFlow network, based on active network measurement theory and the unique characteristics of OpenFlow. In order to adapt to the characteristics of OpenFlow and avoid the introduction of additional measurement related loads to the controller, we put forward and adopt a solution that the probe packets route forward based on the carried routing information of the measured path. This thesis first introduces measurement techniques and projects of IP network, especially the Cisco IP SLAs and analyzes the principles, advantages and disadvantages of the existing OpenFlow measurement techniques. Then, this thesis makes the functional design of the subsystem, and analyzes the scenarios and advantages of the subsystem. On this basis, the thesis introduces the comprehensive top-down design of the OpenFlow Network Monitoring Subsystem, including requirement analysis, outline design and detailed design, and introduces the functional tests that made on the subsystem after it has been implemented. Finally, this thesis proposes the plans and content of further work to refine and improve the subsystem.
