| As the carrier of information, news reports play a very important role of modern life.Because of this, the research of news report also becomes necessary. In the past years,many scholars both at home and abroad are dedicated to the research of the Theme andRheme Theory. They also explored the using tendencies of the thematic progressionemployed in news reports. Nevertheless, the classification of Thematic ProgressionPatterns have not reached an agreement and the comparative research among news reportswith different contents are relatively fewer.Based on Halliday’s (2000) Theme-Rheme Theory and Danes’s (1970) ThematicProgression Theory, this research aims to further explore the thematic progression patternsemployed in political news reports, disaster news reports, sports news reports and sci-technews reports. At the same time, this research breaks the previous model, and analysesthese patterns with the assistance of the coordinate graph. The author tentative put forwardthe new types of the patterns and analyze on the tendencies of using the thematicprogression patterns in each type of news report and try to find out the reasons causing thedifferences or similarities among these four types of news report.Three research questions were discussed in this thesis.(1) How many Thematic Progression Patterns can be employed in news report?(2) Are the tendencies of the Thematic Progression Patterns used in political newsreports, disaster news reports, sports news reports and sci-tech news reports similar? If thetendencies used are similar, which patterns occupy the highest frequency in these fourtypes of news reports?(3) Are the Thematic Progression Pattern employed in the four types of news reportsthat belong to the same genre influenced by the news’ content?Sixty news reports covering political news reports, disaster news reports, sports news reports and sci-tech news reports were collected from CCTV-NEWS channel. Four typesof corpus with each one consisting of fifteen news samples were established in thisresearch and the thematic progression patterns employed in each corpus were summarizedand analyzed. The results showed that, there are nine types of thematic progressionpatterns employed in news report they are Simple Linear Pattern, Parallel Pattern,Concentrated Pattern, Zig-zag Pattern, Bilateral Pattern, Derived Pattern, Unified Pattern,Overlapped Pattern and Skipping Pattern. The tendencies of using the thematicprogression pattern in these four types news reports are similar and Parallel Pattern andSimple Linear Pattern occupy the first two places of frequency in these four types of newsreports. The Thematic Progression Pattern employed in the four types of news reports thatbelong to the same genre are influenced by the news’ content.This research focus on the thematic progression pattern of news reports. Through thestudy, the author put forward six newly found patterns Partially Zig-zag Pattern,Completely Zig-zag Pattern, Theme Derived Pattern, Rheme Derived Pattern, ThemeUnified Pattern and Rheme Unified pattern. In the researching process, the author alsoestablished the corpus and the coordinate graph. The findings and the results of this thesismight enrich the Theme-Rheme and Thematic Progression Theories, and then be helpfulfor the understanding of news discourses. |
