In the application of digital signal processing, the traditional digital signalprocessor(DSP)and application specific integrated circuits (ASIC) cannot meet therequirements of high processing speed, low power consumption and applicationflexibility and so on at the same time. Application Specific Instruction Set Processor(ASIP) combines the high processing speed of ASIC and the programmability of DSP,can effectively balance both performance. Especially, its parallel process-unit arrayarchitecture is suitable for FPGA implementation. Based on our lab projects research,this paper contains the following four parts of work focused on the design and theapplication of ASIP parallel architecture and special function unit:First, as to the problem of the data exchange in SIMD or MIMD structure, wedesign a tight coupling structure which takes multiport shared memory as theinterconnection networks. Then, based on this structure, we accomplish1024pointsFFT algorithm to verify the correctness of this design.Second, as to the problem that a same basic arithmetic function is repeatedlyexecuted in FFT algorithm, we propose a design of special butterfly unit to reduce thenumber of instructions and increase processing speed.Third, as to the project that the engineering implementation of microwavecompressive sensing imaging algorithm, we propose another solution of using ASIPparallel processing system to implementation. Then, we analyze the algorithm to verifyits feasibility on ASIP.Fourth, based on the part of binary arithmetic coding algorithm in the project ofH.264compression, we put forward a method of using ASIP as function unit toimplement the algorithm. Then, we design a24-bit ASIP through the ASIP configurableplatform and achieve the binary arithmetic coding algorithm. According to thecharacteristics of the binary arithmetic coding algorithm, we design a variable lengthshift instructions which is based on barrel shifter.
