At present, most universities, research institutes and museums use traditional specimenaccounts to manage fossils, minerals, etc. As their specimen banks become larger and larger, the traditional method manual labor can no longer satisfy the growing need. What’s worse, manual specimen accounts give rise to a series of problems, such as the missing of specimens, the difficulty in searching and recycling. It also fails to meet the demands of resource sharingand popularization of science (apart from the museum’s specimens on display). This paper aims to construct a multilayered specimen management system withresources open to all clients, including a special search engine that provide managerialfunctions for specimen banks and support all kinds of full-text searches. Base on theabove-mentioned two functions, the system can enhance the value of the specimens andpromote resource sharing by enabling clients access to its multilayered resources (such asresearch data and specimens shared by ordinary fans). This paper contains:1) A survey on universities, research institutes and the demands of electronic specimenmanagement system.2) To construct a specimen bank based on the survey results so that professional researchinstitutes and ordinary fans alike can have access to electronic management of the specimens.3) An in-depth discussion on the query and search functions towards a large number ofspecimen. Lucene, an open-source engine, is used to conduct the full-text search.4) Resource sharing of specimens and knowledge. Not only professional clients, but alsocommon paleontology lovers can use this database. It can further be expanded into an onlinemuseum, which serves as a platform to popularize paleontology.5) This system is built using Strurs+Spring+Hibernate framework and Maven, whichallows rapid development and extendibility.Generally speaking, the experiment result can meet the requirements of specimenmanagement and knowledge sharing and expands the rage of application of specimen banks, which is of great referential use to research institutes, pop-science websites, etc.
