Since the early16th century when printing modern newspaper appeared for the first time, its layout has had enormous changes during the400years. During the early21st century and the end of the20th century, the entire media industry is gradually entering the era of media convergence. In this context, all aspects of newspaper including the technical, the ownership, the development strategy, the organizational structure, the content and the form of the news reports are in the the course of a qualitative change. The newspapers are no longer a separate existence. In order to survive in the new situation, newpapers must be integrated with other media interactively. And meantime, the newspaper design is no longer a discussion of how can newspapers make the beauty of the layout and the news reports combined harmoniously. This paper discusses how the design of newspapers adapt to the requirements of media convergence, by absorbing other media’s, especially the new media’s, interface design features. But at the same time the newpapers layout must adhere to their own characteristics, develop the their own advantages. After reviewing the development of western newspapers’ layout and Chinese newspapers’ layout briefly, I found that each innovation of the newspapers’layout is accumulated bit by bit and subjects to the media technology, the market and the competition. In this paper, I found that the advantages of the new media’s user interface design can be used for newspaper design, such as the portable design, the multimedia design and the convenience to operate and interact with. Although newspapers can not go beyond their own technical limitations, but do exactly can be more in line with the integration of media convergence by enhancing legibility and interaction with readers.
