In recent years, due to the continuous development of mobile communication technology, people’s lives are linked with the technology more and more closely; they can communicate by laptop and handheld PDA devices. Now the mobile communication network can be divided into two categories in accordance with the network structural characteristics:one is the base station-type network controlled by centre, the other is Ad Hoc network that can become network temporarily, automatically and quickly. Since Ad Hoc networks have many advantages, for example, no center and self-organization, dynamic network topology, multi-hop routing and distributed control, it can be applied to both the military field and the civilian field. Because the Ad Hoc network nodes mobile randomly, which makes the network topology changed, the routing protocols that ensure normal communication has become an important research direction. DSR protocol that is designed specifically for Ad Hoc networks is an on-demand network routing protocol, it is widely concerned because of DSR’s simplicity, high efficiency, low spending and low complexity, so DSR is considered one of the most valuable use network protocols.This paper describes the characteristics of Ad Hoc networks in detail first and analyzes protocols design requirements, while the Ad Hoc network routing protocols are classified and compared, then we elaborate routing principles and characteristics of server classic routing protocols in Ad Hoc networks. This paper focuses on analyzing and researching DSR protocol, several questions about DSR protocol are raised at the same time, and then this paper proposed an improved protocol-IDSR protocol. IDSR proposed an improved policy that cache updated dynamically, the cache deleted its failure routing timely through the location relation of nodes in neighbor table so as to achieve the high correct rate of routing information purposes. In the meanwhile, IDSR proposed the route shorten strategy, which will delete the redundant node to ensure communication more efficient. At last it introduced energy balance policy which can select better route according to the residual energy of nodes for extending the network life cycle.Finally this paper used NS-2simulator to build a platform for simulation working to simulate, compare and analyze IDSR and DSR by using the same simulation environment. the simulation results demonstrated that IDSR can perform better than DSR.
