With the rapid development of computer technology and digital image processing technology, image visual inspection has advantages of a wide range of applications in industrial, defense, aerospace and other fields, due to its non-contact, fast, suitable precision, intelligence and others. Nowadays, image acquisition, processing and control of most of the visual inspection systems based on computer are the lack of real-time, the heavy load of the computer. With the rapid development of microelectronics technology, the FPGA application in the image visual inspection system has become a trend. This paper first designs a FPGA-based visual inspection system by analyzing the status of the visual inspection system. Through the division of the module and the realization of Modbus protocol interface, the computer could come up with a remote configuration of the image sensor system via the485bus; and image feature extraction can be realized by the low-pass filter, the edge detection via the LOG algorithm and Sobel algorithm and corner detection via SUSAN algorithm through the Verilog language programming on the system. In order to verify the FPGA image processing results, the paper also verifies the image algorithm and compare the results of image processing by software based on VB.NET development languages and by hardware based on FPGA. At the same time the paper also completes the design of the host computer communication software in the image visual inspection system and functional design of common image processing software by using VB.NETBased on the Visual inspection system with a core as FPGA, the bottom of the image processing is completed through FPGA, which not only reduces the load of the computer, but greatly improves the system’s real-time performance due to the characteristics of FPGA parallel execution, simple and clear characterized detected objects can be directly detected through the system, so that the processing of the host computer is not necessaryIn this paper, with FPGA as its core, the flexibility, easy to modify and test characteristic, the automatically upgraded of the visual inspection system could be enhanced. Meanwhile it also has advantages such as a low design costs, a specific short developing cycle and a real-time performance advantages.
