With the rapid development of the socio-economic and urbanization, and city street lighting electricity consumption is growing. In order to meet the city’s modern development, and based upon the combination of computer technology and network technology, a reliable, energy efficient, high degree of automation, easy to use and maintenance of city street lighting control systems was regarded as an important research project in contemporary society.Considering the practical needs of today’s society, a city street lighting remote monitoring system based on a combination of power line carrier communication (PLCC) and GPRS wireless communication was designed. The characteristics of these two means of communication were applied, so it is more cost-effective.The main contents of this paper include building the basic architecture of the system, designing street light controller (that is to say, the node controller), centralized controller and the communication of the system. The city street lighting remote monitoring system would completed by using electronic design technologies and embedded technology, combined with optimized programming techniques. The main work is as follows:Firstly, the background and current research and development direction of city lights monitoring system were described.Secondly, the overall design of the city lights monitoring system was described, and an overview of the main function of the overall structure of the system, the system used by communications technology, the system works with the system were overviewed. In the system of communication, PLCC was used for achieving communication between each street light controller, and communication between centralized controller and street light controller, and GPRS communication was used for communication between centralized controller and the central control room.Thirdly, related hardware design of the entire system was described at the hardware level. The centralized controller was composed by several parts of the STM32F103microcontroller, GPRS communication circuit, power line carrier circuit, power circuit, keypad, the EEPROM, status indication circuits and serial communication circuit and so on. The street light Controller was composed by several parts of the STM32F103microcontroller, relay control circuit, power line carrier circuit, power circuit, keypad, the EEPROM, status indication circuits and serial communication circuit and so on.Fourthly, the whole system software design was described at the software level. Modular thinking design was used for software part of the centralized controller, and the main program MG323GSM/GPRS communication routines, power line carrier communication MI200E subroutines and interrupt service functions were also designed; additionally, power line carrier communication protocol has been improved.Fifthly, in the perspective of hardware and software facilities, the system was given simulation experiment, and the results were analyzed. The experiment results showed that the system was running well and all indicators can meet the desired requirements and have practical value.
