The smart space is an important field of pervasive computing. The goal of thesmart space is to build a workspace which embedded computing, information systemsand multi-modal sensors, so that users can access information and computing servicesvery easily, thus efficiently work alone or work together with others. The basis ofproviding personalized services in the smart space is data aware, which included datacollection, expression, transmission and fusion. Among all the processes, the premiseof data collection is to build an efficient and reliable wireless sensor network, thebasis of the data transmission and fusion is unified and standardized representation ofthe data.The ZigBee technology is selected to build the sensor nodes and sensor network,after analyzing and comparing of three popular wireless communication technologies.Firstly, Arduino development board and XBee modules are applied to construct thesensor nodes after analyzing the requirement. Next, after analyzing the structure of theZigBee-based network and considering the characteristics of the XBee modules, themesh topology is chosen to be the structure, and the network is built by configuringoperating mode and parameters of the XBee modules. Finally, the perception,transmission and aggregation of the environmental data are achieved by programming.Experiments show that the data can be effectively and reliably transmitted through thewireless sensor network.To the point of data representation and data fusion in the network, a multi-modalmodel of users’ interaction in smart space is firstly established. A transmitting dataformat base on XML in the wireless network is also defined based on the model,which is used to standardize the description and transfer of perception data andprovide a basis for the fusion of perception data. Secondly, considering the populardata fusion technologies and the characteristics of the data in the smart space, thedetection-level data fusion technology is chosen in this thesis. Finally, the thesisdesign a detection-level data fusion algorithm to reduce the invalid data in thenetwork. Experiments to verify the feasibility and validity of the data fusion methodare also included.Based on the research above, this thesis designed a smart space environmentmonitor subsystem. First, this thesis describes the scenarios of the environmentmonitor subsystem of the smart space. The architecture of the system is designedaccording to the refining the interactive mode of the environment monitor subsystem.The system consists of the data aware module, data gateway module, device controlmodule and Web publishing module. The thesis focused on the designing and implementing of the data gateway module, device control module and Web publishingmodule, and verified by experiment the validity of research results.
