From the perspective of sociology, the school is not only the activity space of teachers and students, but also a special social field; the classroom silence of students is not only an education problem, but also a social problem. The study on the basis of school life by observing in E middle school in Nanjing attempts to describe the phenomenon of student classroom silence, and further reveals the social control mechanism in school education which hides behind the student classroom silence.This paper first describes the performance characteristics, the performance types and the formation process of the student classroom silence. The student classroom silence characterized mainly four aspects of the phase, difference, passive and context, and according to students’response and performance to the teaching of the teachers in the classroom, the student classroom silence is divided into four types, they are the type of obedience silence, avoidant silence, the type of hesitation silence and the type of helpless silence. Additionally, the student classroom silence does not occur naturally, it experiences a process of a gradually formed from scratch, the researcher divide the process into five stages, they are they are disdain and ignore, protest and contention, temptation and communication, choose and obedience and fundamental silence. The reason for the student classroom silence is a complex and multifaceted, in this study, the student classroom silence phenomenon is attributed to the social control from the perspective of social interaction. Therefore, the student classroom silence as the entry point of the study, and further reveals the social control mechanism in school education which hides behind the student classroom silence. Social control in school education mainly for the school regulates control and teacher knowledge control. School regulates control includes:control on the daily behavior specification of students, the layout of the school and classroom space, control on study schedules of students, the formulation of classroom discipline of teachers and so on; teachers knowledge control includes aspects of the control of the teaching activities:control the formulation of teaching program of activities, control the choice of teaching methods, control the standard of teaching evaluation and so on. These means of social control show that there is a mechanism of social control in the school education, it mainly consists three basic control mechanism of regulates control, significance control and balance mechanism.In summary, the study attempts to the student classroom silence as an entry point, and reveals the existence of social control mechanisms, and provide a sociological reflection and reference for school daily teaching practice while seeking a new perspective on the causes of the student classroom silence by the analysis of specific performance and operation of the mechanism of social control in the school daily life.
