"Cultural Island" In The Traditional Cultural Heritage And Change

"Cultural Island" or "Island Culture" is a certain region of settlements described byanthropologists and historians with the concept of geography, where lives a group ofpeople isolating from the mainstream culture group. There are two main features of thisregion, one is a small population in the community, the other is different culture fromsurrounding; it likes a solitary island in ocean. Cultural Island not only refers to theisland geographically isolated from the mainstream group, but also refers topsychologically isolation from the mainstream culture group.Yao hui community is located in the northwest of PingLu County inShanxiProvince, which is five kilometers away from the county center. It has a mosqueand it is worthy of the name "cultural island".Based on thorough investigation on the field and all-around research on the inheritanceand transition of traditional culture of YaoLi Hui ethnic community, this paper findsthat the outer material of culture has a great many changes, while the core spirit cultureof Hui ethnics has passed down. In this way, the system culture and behavior culturehave changed in some parts, and inherited in other parts.Cultural inheritance and Changes not only have different characteristics respectively,but also have their common parts. In other words, there are changes in inheritance, andat the same time inheritance in changes. The author mainly discusses transitional factorsof traditional culture: relatively close geographical location, Mosque-islamicreligious media, Language-culture symbol, inherited family education.In addition, the author concludes some enlightenment from the state of“CulturalIsland”of YaoLi Hui ethnics, that is, the best protection on traditional culture is to letit naturally develop, while what we should do is to protect this natural state.
