The heavy metal pollution in soil and dust on both sides of urban roads has an enormous impact on the human and environment. For Yangzhou City, the best city for human settlement identified by the United Nations and the central city of Water Diversion Project (East Route), it is of important realistic and scientific significance to make clear of the current status of heavy metal pollution in soil and dust. Based on the research and evaluation of content level, spatial distribution and pollution degree of heavy metals in soil and dust on both sides of urban roads of Yangzhou City, the paper draws the following conclusions:1.The soil on both sides of urban roads of Yangzhou City presents obvious alkaline. Its organic matter content is very low, and the soil belongs basically to mineral soil. The average of the total Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn and Cd in soil on both sides of the roads are respectively several times higher than the background values. The available contents account for a very small percentage of the total. The spatial distribution of the five heavy metals is very uneven with great difference. There is significantly positive correlation among the five heavy metals.2.The geological accumination index and potential ecological risk index are used to evaluate the pollution degree of heavy metals in soil on both sides of the roads, in which Cd has the most serious pollution, and Cr the slightest. The order of potential ecological risk level of the six sections is:Jiang Yang Middle Road> University South-North Road> Wenchang Middle Road> Wenhui East Road-Nantong West Road,> Wenhe South Road-Lotus Pond Road> Huaihai Road.3. The contents of Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn and Cd in dust on both sides of the roads of Yangzhou City are significantly lower compared with those of Shanghai and other cities. The contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn and Cr in dust on the bus station platforms of Yangzhou City are all higher than the soil background values. 4.The geological accumination index and potential ecological risk index are used to evaluate the pollution degree of heavy metals in dust on both sides of the roads, in which Cd has the most serious pollution. The heavy metal pollution in dust is more serious than that in soil.
