Loess hilly and gully region is an extensively distributed part of the Loess Plateau of China. It has the characteristics of serious soil erosion and fragile ecological environment. The main landform types are ridge, hills and gully. Previous studies of the morphological patterns are primarily for the valley landscape, and experienced four stages of "qualitative description-quantitative description-combining qualitative and quantitative analysis-fractal analysis". But it has failed to solve the comprehensive characterization of the topographic spatial structure and combination problems, and affected the comprehensive development of loess landforms. Landscape ecology is the integrated disciplines to study of the landscape unit type composition, space configuration and its relation to the ecological process. Use the landscape pattern analysis methods will help us to study the landscape patterns’spatial distribution and their developmental process in loess hilly and gully region. This study is in a small watershed, under the landscape’s basic pattern of "patch-corridor-matrix", loess hilly and gully region is divided into four landscape type of "Ridge","Hill","Slope" and "Gully".Using the spatial analysis of GIS, DEM data mining and RS secondary rectification to extract the landscape units. And then the study use the method of target index and elements analysis to selecting the fit landscape index, and create the quantitative landscape index of loess hills and gully landscape with these indices. At the end, the study uses the quantitative landscape index to analysis the different district in Jiuyuangou watershed. The analysis result indicates that these quantitative indices can analysis the difference of different district in the same watershed. And using the landscape indices to quantitatively descript the spatial distribution of loess hilly landscape, it has important scientific implications and application value for understanding the loess landforms evolution and development process.
