Antonio Lopez Garcia is known as the most remarkable realist painter. He began to show his talent in the Spanish art world in the1960s and received high praise in the international art in1990s. He is one of the famous contemporary realist artists. He devotes his sincere feelings into the works and has his own way to interpret the themes of each painting. His excellent characteristics originate from his outstanding artistic talent, fluent skill to represent realism, and solid techniques and creativity. The styles of Lopez’s works have undergone four phases:figurative expressionism, magic realism, stable style in his middle age and back-to-nature realism. Lopez’s work is the heritage of the greatest naturalistic artists in Spain. Albeit he employs the most traditional realism painting language, his works demonstrate the modern style. With his exquisite composition, harmony and subtle colors, his thorough investigation on images and his accurate depiction of light, he turns ordinary things into a sense of magic fresh vitality.Lopez’s works focus on depicting the world of his own. His inspiration is stimulated mostly by the family, the city of Madrid where he is living and his daily necessities, which are simple and ordinary things. He devoted his true feeling onto the canvas, which results in beauty beyond the form of composition. Meanwhile, he is also a painter who has lots of works of sculptures. Through years of practice, the volume and texture in the modeling of sculptures becomes a feature of his works. His paintings depict the ever-changing appearance of this world, and the visual effect that accumulates on his canvas shows a real and cold mystery that is hard to touch.Nowadays, his works with lonely and quiet features give us a huge visual impact. In the time of his life, the western society was developing rapidly, and the culture an d arts at that time were undergoing an interaction of various ideological trends. The c ritics with the post-modern tendencies dominated the right of art criticism. From the philosophical perspective, they questioned or even denied the artistic traditions of re alism. The mainstream culture led to popular and innovative arts. For those reason, it had significant impact on the traditional realism in arts. Especially, due to the rapid t ransformation of the social form, there were impetuosity and anxiety in the whole so cial atmosphere. After the World War Ⅱ, the contemporary art with the post-modern art as core resulted in a thorough change in the previous concepts of art. A variety of artistic approaches was proposed and flourished. Therefore, it is very advisable that Lopez does not drift in other art formats and he insists on the traditional value orient ations of art. From Lopez’s artistic achievements, we find realism and figurative paintings still have vitality, and traditional paintings are still quite completive. Through the research on Lopez and the comparison between him and other realist painters, we will find the best way to learn from the paintings in the west. The figurative realism of western paintings and the spirit of traditional Chinese painting have strong visual and content contrast. From Lopez, we can find the spiritual connotation of the realism, so as to achieve the aesthetic mutual supplement between the Chinese and the western paintings, establish a correct value orientation, and contribute the development of Chinese paintings in the future.
