In painting the color tone is the existing form of content and extension. If apainting is lack of color harmony, It is like a black and white photo missing certainvisual beauty. Psychological research shows that the first sense of people is the visualsense, while color is the most obvious factors to visual effects.We will always produceviolent mood swings in different tonal stimuli.In oil painting, the use of different colorscan be said to be extremely important, providing an endless stream of vitality.This article will analyze and review the importance and application of color tension.The first part is mainly to discuss the basic definition and attribute of tension, includingthe concept of tension and color characteristics.The second part mainly concerned the relationship between some certain colorsand visual perception. Art’s function is to perceive beauty and to appreciate it throughthe human visual perception.while visual perception is not simply through the eyes toview surface, but to think through perception, to try to figure out the nature of it.The third part mainly talks about the four types of color tone and it also analyzesthe works of representative painter by elaborating the classical color, the conditions ofcolor, Color expression and the intention of color. Therefore we can see the values andpositions of color in the different periods of art and also we can feel the pleasure andenjoyment of beauty in a visual and spiritual sense which the tension in the paintingcolor gives the audiences.Finally, the paper further elaborates the importance of tension in the color of oilpainting from the different understandings and expressions of color tone in China andWestern and it comes to the conclusion that color language, as an important means ofexpression in oil painting, has become an indispensable aesthetic elements in theaesthetic theory by contrasting the esthetic thought and the color performance.
