BackgroundAcupuncture therapy have the predominant effect to the Idiopathic Facial palsy. The great majority of the patients will recover completely, however, about10%to25%patients will remain different degrees of the dysfunction of the facial nerve. One research pointed that effective therapy as soon as possible in acute phase of the disease is crucial to the recovery of the patients, which it is the protective factor of the Idiopathic Facial palsy. And Modern Western Medical research have proved that magnet therapy could release pain and reduce the inflammation. In view of this, the research for more effective treatments in acute phase of Idiopathic Facial palsy has prominent socioeconomic significance.ObjectiveThrough observing how long it takes effect and the therapeutic effect of electric magnet therapy at acu-points in acute phase of the Idiopathic Facial palsy, evaluating the effect of the therapy generally, to develop an easy-operating, rapid and effective clinic treatment method.MethodsRandomized controlled trials were carried out in this research.60qualified Idiopathic Facial palsy patients were randomly divided into two groups——treatment group and control group, with30cases in each group. The acu-points we choose mainly locate in the face as following:ST2, ST4, ST6, SJ17, GB14,Qianzheng (all above is in the affected-side), partially in distal end of the body like:SJ5(affected-side), ST 40(affected-side), LI4(two-side).In treatment group, electric magnet therapy was taken at the acu-points of the regional face while the eletric acupuncture treatment was used at the distal acu-points in acute phase. And in convalescence, eletric acupuncture treatment was used at all the acu-points above. In the control group, shallow needling was applied at the acu-points of regional face while electric acupuncture treatment was used at the distal acu-points in acute phase And the treatment in convalescence accord with the treatment group. The treatments were carried out five times a week, and the course of treatments was4weeks.At the same time, Both of groups were asked to take the pills (pred-nisone and mecobalamine). Before, after the treatment and in treatment period, through the House-Brackmann Facial Nerve Grading Systems, Nottingham system, as well as the Yanagihara Grading Scores, all the patients were evaluated to prove that if it is effective to cure the disease with electric magnet therapy at acu-points.ResultBefore the treatment, there was no statistical difference (P>0.05) between the two groups in terms of age, gender, course of disease, affected location of the facial nerve, as well as the House-Brackmann facial nerve grade, the score of Nottingham System and Yanagihara Grading.1.Comparing before and after the treatment in both groups, House-Brackmann facial nerve grade, the score of Nottingham System and Yanagihara Grading improve, which is significantly different(P<0.05).It illustrated that two kinds of therapy are all effective to cure the Idiopathic Facial palsy.2. The comparison between the two groups is carried out. it shows that the improvement of the score of Nottingham System and Yanagihara in treatment group is no different with the control group, which is no signi ficance statistically(P>0.05).3. After the therapy, the treatment group had a cured rate of56.7%, a significant improved rate of76.6%, and a total effective rate of90.0%, and17cases were cured,6cases were significant improved,4cases were improved,3case had no effect. The control group had a cured rate of46.7%, a significant improved rate of76.7%, and a total effect rate of86.7%, and14cases were cured,9cases were significant improved,3cases were improved,4cases had no effect. The general effect of two groups had no significant difference (P>0.05).4. In the treatment group, it takes8days averagely to become effective. However, it cost15days averagely in control group, which is significantly different(P<0.05).so as the time it takes in completely cured or significant improved patients (P<0.05). In treatment group, the total trea-tment course is about2weeks when it is about3weeks in control group.ConclusionBoth therapies were effective in treating the Idiopathic Facial palsy, which could improve the patient’s function of the facial nerve. And two kinds of therapy have the the identical effcet to the disease. However, the electric magnet therapy takes effect faster so that it could decrease the healing course obviously.
