| The newborn dairy calves are usually too weak to fight diseases because of getting little colostrum which contains immunoglobulin can improve passive immunity. The use of antibiotics did some damages to calves as well as achieved certain effect. Compound Nvzhenzi preparation was developed by our laboratory, composed of Ligustrum Lucidum, Codonopsis Pilosula, and Astragalus Mongholicus, showed significant activity in promoting body immunity. To explore the effect of compound Nvzhenzi and probiotics on newborn dairy calves, the influence of compound Nvzhenzi on probiotics was invested; the influence of compound Nvzhenzi and probiotics on growth performance, health, and immune function in calves were studied in present experiments when used separately and simultaneously.We used double broth dilution method to invest the impact of compound Nvzhenzi on probiotics. The results showed that compound Nvzhenzi had no inhibition on probiotics, which indicated that compound Nvzhenzi and probiotics could use together.In this experiment, twenty3-5days old dairy calves were randomly divided into four groups, group A (Nvzhenzi group), group B (probiotics group), group C (Nvzhenzi combined with probiotics group), and group D (blank control group). Calves were orally administered60mL of compound Nvzhenzi extract fluid (1g/mL),2mL of probiotics,60mL of compound Nvzhenzi extract fluid and2mL of probiotics, and60mL of normal saline per day for1month in group A, B, C, and D respectively. The experiment lasts5months. The diarrhea rate, survival rate, growth index, and immunologic function were measured. The results showed that the diarrhea rate were1.26%,1.76%, and3.11%, the fever rate were1.56%,1.42%, and2.64%in group C, group A, and group D respectively, the survival rate were100%in both group C and group A. The gaining effect of group B was significant (P<0.05) during first30days, whereas, group C had significant (P<0.01) gaining effect from30~120days. The body height and body slanting length of group B and C were increased significantly (P<0.05) compared with group A and group D during first30days. From60-120days, the improvement of abdominal circumference, body height, and body slanting length of group C were remarkable compared with group D (P<0.01).To invest immune function, levels of IgG, IgA, IgM, and IL-1in serum were determined by EL1SA, T lymphocyte proliferation in spleen was detected by MTT test, LZM and AKP content were measured by biochemical method. The results showed that the spleen and thymus index of group C were higher than group D (P<0.05). From30~60days, the group C had the highest level of LZM. The level of AKP of group A, B, and C were higher than group D (P<0.05) throughout the entire experiment period, besides, group C AKP level was much higher than group D (P<0.01) at60days. The level of IL-1of group C was higher than group D (P<0.01) from30~90days. The combined use of compound Nvzhenzi and probiotics could significantly improve lymphocyte proliferation (P<0.01), Nvzhenzi group and probiotics group lymphocyte proliferation were better than the control group (P<0.05) throughout the whole experiment. After30days, the IgG and IgA level of group B were higher than group D (P<0.05), the IgG level of group A and group C were better than group D (P<0.01). After90days, the compound Nvzhenzi and combined use of Nvzhenzi and probiotics could significantly improve the level of IgM compared with control group (P<0.01).In conclusion, the compound Nvzhenzi had no inhibition on probiotics. Both probiotics and compound Nvzhenzi had significant effect in promoting growth performance and stimulating immune function especially when compound Nvzhenzi combined with probiotics. |
