Traditional Houses Of The Old City Of Jinan Regional Style And Conservation Strategy

Traditional dwellings are precious heritage with a more than5thousand yearlong history, which are world famous for its exquisite craftsmanship, elegant shapeand rich connotation. Some traditional dwellings with local characteristics canintensely reflect the local historical cultures, natural conditions and social customs.After years of accumulation and inheritance, they have become an important culturalresource to unite the nations and know about history. Therefore, the regionalcharacteristics of traditional dwellings have attracted architectural fans all over theworld. The geographical boundaries and diverse styles are also hot topics amongpeople. Traditional dwellings have become a tourism resource driving China’seconomic development as well as promoting the progress of our residentialarchitectural culture.As the capital city of Shandong Province and a nationwide famous cultural city,Jinan takes an advantage in its historical and cultural resources. To date, thearchitectural styles and features have been preserved in most residential houses in theold town area. However, due to the rapid development in tourism, the preservation oftraditional dwellings in the old town area is under great threat by the aging ofbuildings and the influence of commercialization.This paper focuses on the research of regional characteristic and preservation oftraditional dwellings in Jinan’s old town area. First, the local background oftraditional dwellings in the old town area will be analyzed on the basis of the generalconditions of the area. Then a research and analysis will be carried out into the formsof layout, structural styles and architecture materials of the traditional dwellings.Referring to the field study and mass data collected, starting from the regionalcharacteristics of the urban area in Jinan, analyzing the combination of the localarchitectural elements of “springs and poplars in every house” with the styles andcharacteristics of traditional dwellings in the old town area, mainly targeting at thedevelopment of architectural craftsmanship in the old town area. As regard to theaging and function decline of residential buildings, corresponding protection measures and solutions will be explored. In the process of preserving the traditionalcharacteristics of the regional dwellings in the old town area, the artistic features ofJinan’s Spring Culture will be maintained.
