The Selection And Application Of Materials And Techniques In The Conservation And Restoration Of The Heritage Buildings

The selection and application of materials and techniques in the conservation and restoration of the heritage buildings is a prominent problem in cultural relic preservation. Controversies stem from different understandings and comprehensions. Although related laws and acts provide definite guidance and principles, ambiguities and discretion still exist in current practices.In the paper, the author will review the reconstruction and renovation of the Hall of Supreme Harmony (Taihe Dian) in history. And along with her experiences in participating the renovation program of the Hall of Supreme Harmony (Taihe Dian) in2006to2008, she will analyze, conclude, and summarize the variation of materials and techniques in the conservation and restoration of this building in history from four aspects, which included wooden structures, decorative paintings, lacquer works on the red wall, gold ornaments, in order to obtain enlightenments and inspirations and provide helpful references for the further execution.
