With the rapid development of society,a variety of public buildings has been usedfrequently for the improvement of people’s spiritual life. This trend makes avariety of new and innovative buildings to increase rapidly, and the new long-spanbuilding has become the main public places especially from the late20thcentury tothe early21stcentury. The kind of buildings’ feature is light, soft, the smallerdamping and that strong vibration is produced easily by outside incentive that thesevibration may be not influence the safety of the structure, but structure’s normaloperations can not be guaranteed.Building vibration comfort becomes more and more significant in the area ofpedestrian bridges, large ballrooms, exhibition halls and large gymnasiums wheremany people hold activities at the same time. Not only does these vibration affectpeople’s normal activities, but also it lead people suffering from psychological fear. Inthis paper, Guangzhou International Sports and Performing Arts Center being taken asan engineering background, the problem of vibration of the similar large-span stadiumgrandstand makes the following research:The author has collected the material about vibration comfort and sorted out theevaluation standards floor vibration comfort that main scholars did and discussed therange of limits of grandstand structure comfort.The paper elaborated systematically the theoretical principles of modal analysisand the basic process of modal test, that picking up the modal parameters of the westand south stands by modal testing and finite element simulation. Fundamentalfrequency and first three main primary modes were obtained and that the mainvibration of stands structure is local vibration is found according to the comparison ofresults of two methods.Combining with the literature about vibration produced by human, the paperanalyzed the principle of single-step off the foot of the curve systematically andtested single-step off the foot and consecutive walks load that will study the walkingexcitation when audience is entering the gymnasium.The paper studied the acceleration response of western grandstands at theconcert process and obtained the maximum acceleration response by tested vibrationacceleration time history and combination of comfort evaluation limits given by theISO standard to evaluate the vibration comfort in the use of the gymnasium grandstands. Finally, the paper will give some suggestion about vibration comfortdesign of similar gymnasium grandstands according to this project instance.
