The ultrasonic nebulization extraction combined with single dropmicroextraction (SDME) was applied for extracting volatile constituents from fruitjuices and Chinese herbal medicine. The ultrasonic nebulization headspace singledrop microextraction (UN-HS-SDME) was developed. the ionic liquid1-hexyl-l-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C6MIM][BF4]) was used asextraction solvent in SDME. The GC-MS was applied to the separation and detectionof the constituents. The UN-HS-SDME was developed for the extraction of flavour constituentsfrom fruit juices. The parameters affecting extraction performance were investigatedand optimized. The optimized conditions are: ionic liquid,1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluroborate; solvent microdrop volume,12.5μL;extraction time,5min; enrichment time,20min; extraction temperature,80°C; theheight of the microdrop above the solution surface,1cm. By heating the extractionvessel, the transfer of the volatile compounds from the sample to the microdrop wasimproved. Hexyl acetate, limonene and geranyl acetate were identified and detected. The recoveries range from80.4%to115.0%with relative standard deviations rangingfrom1.5%to9.1%. A comparison of the present method and other methods reportedin literature was made. The results indicated that UN-HS-SDME is a feasible andalternative method for extracting flavour constituents from fruit juices. The UN-HS-SDME was applied to extracting volatile compounds from Amomumtsao-ko Crevost et Lemaire. The main factors affecting extraction performance were optimized. Volatile constituents were identified. The constituents of analytes obtainedby the present method were close to those obtained by hydro-distillation, which is astandard extraction method. The present method was suitable for the extraction ofvolatile and semivolatile compounds simultaneously from Chinese herbal medicine.
