The atmospheric aerosol samples were collected in Qingdao coastal region fromSeptember2009to November2010. The concentrations of major water-solubleinorganic ions were analyzed using IC (Ion Chromatography). The concentration, seasonal and size distribution of the atmospheric inorganic ions and impact of weatherconditions on distribution were discussed. The results of atmospheric aerosols in Qingdao coastal region showed thatparticle concentration distribution was spring (407.68μg·m-3)>summer (395.67μg·m-3)>winter (270.64μg·m-3)>autumn (254.67μg·m-3) in Qingdao region fromSeptember2009to August2010. SO42-, NO3-, Na+and NH4+were the dominant ions, accounting for81.0%of water-soluble ions in mass concentration. The ranges of massconcentration of the4ions were4.55μg·m-398.44μg·m-3,2.54μg·m-353.61μg·m-3,0.26μg·m-322.93μg·m-3and1.25μg·m-336.90μg·m-3respectively.Water-soluble inorganic ions originated from different sources and showeddifferent seasonal variations. The mass concentration of Na+was the highest in springwhile the lowest in autumn. The concentrations of NH4+, Cl-, NO3-and SO42-were thehighest in winter while the lowest in autumn. K+had the highest value in autumnwhile the lowest one in spring. Mg2+, Ca2+and F-had the highest value in winter whilethe lowest one in summer. The concentration of PO43-was the highest in autumn andthe differences in other three seasons were not significant.Weather conditions had great influence on the concentrations of TSP andwater-soluble ions. The mass concentrations of TSP were the highest in dust weatherfollowed by haze, fog, smog and sunny days. The mass concentrations of5cationsand5anions in smog, haze and dust days were higher than that in sunny days. In fogdays, except Na+and PO43-, other ions had different levels of elevated.Water-soluble inorganic ions showed different size distribution. Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+,F-, Cl-and PO43-mainly existed in the coarse particles (>2.1μm) while NH4+, K+, NO3- and SO42-mainly existed in the fine ones. The size distributions of ions had seasonal variation. In four seasons, Na+wasconcentrated in the range of3.34.7μm particle size. Moreover, Na+had a peak inaccumulation mode (0.430.65μm) in autumn and winter. Both NH4+and K+showedunimodal distribution and had a peaks in0.651.1μm. Mg2+and Ca2+mainly existedin the coarse particles ranged in3.34.7μm. F-had a peak in coarse mode(3.34.7μm)in winter and concentrated in4.77.0μm in spring and autumn. Besides that, F-presented a peak in7.011μm and a smaller peak in0.430.65μm in summer. Cl-mainly existed in the coarse particles and concentrated in3.34.7μm in spring andsummer but the contribution of coarse particles decreased in the other seasons. Thesize distribution of NO3-had bimodal distribution while SO42-showed unimodaldistribution in four seasons. The distribution characteristic of PO43-was morecomplex. In spring and autumn, PO43-concentrated in the ranges of0.651.1μm and2.13.3μm while in the other seasons it appeared three peaks. The coal-combustion had a great impact on the size distributions of K+, NH4+, F-,Cl-, NO3-, PO43-and SO42-. Both K+and NH4+had a peak in0.430.65μm during theheating period and non-heating period. The size distribution of F-was unimodal, peaking in3.34.7μm during the heating period. F-showed a bimodal distributionwith peaking in0.430.65μm and4.77.0μm during the non-heating period. For thefine particle mode, Cl-had a peak in0.651.1μm during the heating period and0.430.65μm during the non-heating period. However, in the coarse mode, itconcentrated in the ranges of3.34.7μm and7.011μm. The distributioncharacteristics of SO42-and NO3-were very similar, peaking in0.651.1μm and3.34.7μm. The size distribution of PO43-changed greatly from the non-heatingperiod to the heating one. PO43-had three peaks during the non-heating period and themaximum peak value existed in2.13.3μm. During the non-heating period, PO43-mainly existed in the coarse particles while during the heating period it concentratedin the fine mode.
