Aluminum pigment is one of the important metallic pigments and mainly used in suchareas as industrial coatings, automotive coatings, printing inks and plastics processing, due toits unique features and advantages, comapared with other metal pigments. Because of theneed in production process, there is a layer of stearic acid or oleic acid covering on thealuminum surface. At the same time, there is also a layer of oxide film covering on thealuminum surface due to oxidation. These substances on the aluminum surface can bring acertain degree of corrosion resistance, but aluminum pigments must have a higher acid andalkali resistance performance to meet the needs in industrial applications. Therefore, studyof the aluminum paint corrosion-resistant over the years has become one of the hot spots inthe scientific community. We studied the total hydrolysis-polycondensation process of MTES and TEOS first inthe paper. The size of sol particles generated at different MTES/TEOS ratios, differentreaction times, different reaction temperature, different amounts of deionized water, differentamounts of catalyst and different solvents were studied. On the basis, we focus on thehydrophobic properties of the sol generated in different solvents. Furthermore, we studied thesol properties generated by MTES alone, TEOS alone and MTES/TEOS, and then the properreaction reasons are given. The results show that the MTES/of TEOS ratio, reaction time, temperature, deionized water consumption, catalyst amount, solvent and monomer type haveimpact on particle size and hydrophobicity the sols.On the basis of the total hydrolysis-polycondensation process of TEOS and MTES, wedid the corrosion resistance test for the aluminum pigments coated by different MTES/TEOSratios, different reaction times, different reaction temperature, different amounts of deionizedwater, different amounts of catalyst and different solvents. And then the encapsulationconditions optimization has been studied. Finally, we did the encapsulation effect contrastresearch of the aluminum coated with only MTES, only TEOS and MTES/TEOSorganic-inorganic hybrid sol. The representative aluminum samples were characterized withFT-IR, XPS and SEM. The results show that when the reaction situation is3gMTES,2gTEOS,6g ammonia,10g deionized water in ethanol solution at50℃for6h, the coatedaluminum pigment can be soaked in sulfuric acid solution of pH1for6h without hydrogengas releasing and has the best corrosion resistance. Finally, the aluminium pigments coated with MTES/TEOS hybrid coatings were used inpowder coatings. The film properties, including gloss, adhesion and corrosion resistance were examined. However, the gloss has been impacted seriously by agglomerationphenomenon.
