Application Of Wood Plastic Composite In Sandwich Construction

The sandwich construction was a three-layer structure composite comprising two or more components of different nature. It offers such advantages as light weight, high strength weight ratio and cushioning property, ease of processing, modification and design.This paper studied the performance and comparison of sandwich wood veneer face/honeycomb core construction, wood plastic composite/honeycomb core construction, and wood plastic composite with foamed core. The results show that:The honeycomb paper core impregnated with phenolic resin can significantly improve performance of the sandwich composites, the performance of sandwich construction became worse as paper core increased in thickness.In the case of same size of face panel and core, the bending and impact properties of sandwich composites made of wood plastic composite (WPC) face panels and honeycomb paper core was better than those made of wood veneer face panels.The optimum thickness ratio between WPC face panel and honeycomb paper core was2:10,In this research, the thickness of WPC face panel and honeycomb paper core was2mm and10mm respectively.The optimum composition of the sandwich WPC structure was0.7g/cm2for foaming core density,4:6for wood flour to PE ratio, and2%for agent amount content.The bending and impact properties of foamed WPC decreased with the decreasing in wood flour size.The optimum thickness ratio of WPC face panel to foamed WPC core was3:8, In this research the thickness of WPC face panel and foamed WPC core was3mm and8mm respectively.The best density distribution for WPC with foamed core was0.8g/cm3,0.7g/cm3, and0.8g/cm, respectively. Hot pressing temperature was185℃and pressing time was15min. Density distribution had a significant effect on the lateral strength of this sandwich composites.
