3D Visualization and interactive clipping for medical image is currently a hot research issue that the two-dimensional image sequence obtained by CT,MRI and other medical imaging equipment are reconstructed for three-dimensional geometric model to really render interactively and intuitively display on a computer screen. Meanwhile, the technique can realize the real time interaction clipping of the reconstruction object.3D Visualization and interactive clipping can make up the insufficiency of imaging equipment, and also can help doctors for the observation and the analysis of imaging multiple views. The study of it is becoming more and more important in many practices, such as clinic diagnosis, surgery operation, leading treatment and so on. In a word, it is worthwhile to do research work in this filed.The aim of this paper is to study the methods of3D Visualization and the3D interactive clinging of CT/MRI image in arbitrary orientation based on the Visualization Toolkit (VTK). VTK is an open-source, freely available software system for the development of3D medical image visualization. In this paper, VTK was used to reconstruct the3D images by using the CT/MRI slice sequence in DICOM format based on MC (Marching cube) or RC (Ray-Casting) algorithms, which sped up RC algorithm's speed using the technology of the bounding box. A new method for3D CT/MRI reconstructed image clipping based on VTK is presented, which can clip3D object to observe the inner structure using3D widget for manipulating an infinite plane. The normal vector and inner point of virtual clipping plane are set, which is used to clipping3D space of Medical image. At the same time, the information of cross-section images is obtained and the related images are displayed on the screen. The arbitrary2D cross-section images can be generated by moving cursor to control clipping plane. It can be very convenient for the image scaling, translation and rotation to operate on the2D clipping plane and cross-section images in real time. Finally, VC++2008is used to design and implement a three-dimensional Visualization interactive system which can be integrated into the research results based on VTK. This system is useful for advancing the post-processing function of the existing medical image system. It is not only important to theory research, but also valuable and helpful for clinic diagnosis.Experiment results show that the proposed method can effectively implement3D visualization of medical image by using MC (Marching cube) or RC (Ray-Casting) algorithms and arbitrary-orienting clip, rotate, zoom and translate the three dimensional image. Reconstruction effects prove that the method is easy to get satisfied results with good quality in short time. The infinite plane clipping approach can be flexibly realized for the interaction clipping of3D reconstructed image. A software of3D Visualization interactive system based on VTK in VC++2008programmable environment is developed.
