With the development of power grid and improvement of substation voltage level, the area of substation is expanding gradually and the running environment is becoming complexed which makes the inspection range and workload of substation equipments increases greatly. So using manpower inspection and other traditional inspection ways which rely on people's sense and experience can not meet the requirement of comprehensive and accurate inspection, and it brings hidden trouble to running safety of equipments and power grid. Adopting intelligent robot to assist people to inspect equipments can avoid hidden trouble and realize the reliable inspection.This paper carries out the research based on inspection robot and introduces a kind of inspection system of substation equipments based on inspection robot. In this system, the infrared thermography and sensor of visible Charge-coupled Device (CCD) are equipped with the independent or telecontrol way to help people achieve the visible and infrared inspection work of high voltage equipments in substation.This paper mainly discusses system structure of inspection robot, which consists of the introduction of function and module design of base station and mobile station system, and it gives the research on infrared breakdown prediction based on inspection robot. What's more, the relationship between equipment heating and equipment fault and feasibility of analysis on variation law of temperature features points by using the file analysis method are analyzed and the curves of temperature variation as the basis of infrared failure prediction are summarized.
